Ladies Only?

Due to the infamous and fast growing men’s basketball team, the Memorial Coliseum quickly became too small of a place for the wildcats to showcase their talents. It almost seemed that everyone wanted to see the men’s wildcat basketball team in action. During the time that the men were playing at the Memorial Coliseum, they conquered 2 National Championship titles and 16 Southeastern Conference title. This quickly caught the eye of many college basketball fans. The history of the men’s basketball was such an impact; they called Memorial Coliseum “The House that Rupp Built.” Adolph Rupp and Joe B. Hall were the coaches for the wildcats during this successful time. Once the men’s basketball program outgrew the arena, they gave the women’s basketball team the opportunity to have their own arena, even though they still share the area with other women athletics as well as student involvement events. The Memorial Coliseum stands today as the home of many female sports along with graduations, student events and the divine 9 Greek step show causing this arena to be looked at as a multi-purpose arena.

Memorial

Built in 1950, Memorial Coliseum is used for several different purposes. There are several different things that are appealing to the eyes of the students here at the University of Kentucky, but on thing that the students forget is why the building was built in the first place.
The Memorial Coliseum was built around several different years ago to honor over a 10,000 veterans in Kentucky who were killed in the Korean Conflict, World War I and World War II. The arena was made to seat around 12,000, making this one of the largest arenas in the South. Shortly after the arena was given the option to reduce the size by almost 2,000 seats even though the arena would be packed for every event full of students who are ready to watch the University of Kentucky athletics.

Even though the seating was cut down, several things improved in the arena. The renovators added on a weight training room, athlete locker rooms, coach offices and team meeting rooms. Before Rupp Arena was built, the men’s basketball team also expressed their talent in the Memorial Coliseum. Once Rupp Arena along with the Lancaster Aquatics Center was built, it gave Memorial Coliseum the opportunity to have most student activities and involvement on campus.

Memorial Coliseum

Memorial Coliseum is home to a number of athletics here at the University of Kentucky. Kentucky has had the honor of hosting some of the finest competitions in our nation. Memorial Coliseum has been the venue for the first round of the Lady Wildcats basketball NCAA tournament, NCAA final four tournament for volleyball, as well as the SEC Gymnastics Championship.
Now, if you are ever interested in watching our lady wildcats at work. Memorial Coliseum is the place to be. Memorial Coliseum is still the home to the women's basketball team, gymnastics team and the volleyball team.
Even though this may seem like a busy place to be, this is not all that Memorial Coliseum has to offer. The arena is used for several things outside of athletics such as the December Graduation or even a little convention each semester for each student to network while eating some of the finest food. The lottery is also another attraction here a Memorial Hall. Here students are able to draw for seats to watch the Wildcats work. Last but not least we can not forget that they are the host for the Divine-9 greek step show.

D.A. Foundation

June 22, 2014

When I was first notified that we were about to write about anything. So many things crossed my mind at one time... too bad I couldn't grasp a hold of one of the ideas floating in my head. So I actually had to think about a time or space or even an idea to write about.
Throughout my life I have learned that not everyone that converse with everyday is for you. Some people are just waiting for your breaking point and to see you fail. There is a foundation here in our own community that strives to give everyone an equal opportunity to prevail. The mission of this foundation is to help battered women and their families as well as children who are abandon with no place to go. This is a hands on charity as well as a partnership with other charities where the gates are always open, no matter the circumstaneces. I found interest in this charity because I think that not very many people are aware that help is only an arm length away. It is a very popular foundation but isn't as well known as it should be. So by writing about this topic, I hope to bring awareness to help those who are truly in need.

Introduction

Kerra Jones
June 19, 2014

College, there are so many things that I am ready to pursue. Sometimes I don't even know where to begin. There are several things here at the University of Kentucky that has caught my eye but thinking about all of these things at one time has caused to go a little cross eyes here and there. Throughout my four years here at the University of Kentucky, I don't just want to be heard, I want to be understood so that when I walk across the stage with a Bachelors in Science, my footprints will remain.
Everyone is unique in there own way, meaning that my way of research may not benefit one of my peers. But as my mother always told me "Always keep an open mind there is no real harm in trying new things." Therefore I am actually a little nervous to embark upon this activity. As a student I feel that everyone's form of research should not be the exact thing but very similar. This will allow my peers and me to do something that we haven't really done before as well as stepping outside of our confront zone. Each researcher has a different pathway to their success yet they all end up with the same outcome, accurate information.
I also believe that researching something that sparks your interest will allow you to study that topic to the best of your ability. Each individual may not be interested in the same thing. I personally am passionate about health and helping those who are in need of assistance. Being a dentist to some may seem like a minor task or job... but lets just think for a second, what all do we use our teeth for. Eating, talking or even showing a bright smile are some of the things that our community takes for granted.
As my experience here at the University of Kentucky continues I find several things that have caught my attention. First is the Nationally ranked cheerleading team and the College of Agriculture, which is where I will be taking most of my classes.
Each day that I am here at the University, I feel as if I am one step closer to pursuing the career of my dreams. As a child I have always been pretty ambitious. I alway told myself, "if you shoot for the moon and miss, you will always land on a star." Therefore I plan to major in Dietetics and minor in Spanish. Once I have complete undergraduate school I plan to attend Pre-Dentistry school. I have hopes and high wishes of being a pediatric orthodontist.
As I continue to follow my dream, I know that it won't be easy. Research will take a lot of work and time to make sure that you are gathering accurate information. I know that that I will take up most of my time but as I mange my time, research may come a little easier to me. College won't be easy but I know it will be worth it.
